Piano teaching in Norwich

Over the years I have taught a wide range of pupils, aged from 6 to 70–something. Some have chosen to take grade exams (classical and jazz) others have done it just for pleasure. (Not that it's unpleasurable taking exams – it can be very rewarding and is a mark of progress.)

I have taught beginners both children and adults, as well as adults who want to play again having originally learnt as children.

I grew up with classical music and still love playing and teaching it. Jazz was a second love, and my jazz teaching includes the ABRSM jazz syllabus, as well as developing improvisation skills, learning chord voicings and working from lead sheets.

I also teach Music Theory up to Grade 5.

I teach at home in Horstead – a few miles north of Norwich on the North Walsham Rd.

I have found Peter to be a really excellent teacher and guide in learning jazz piano. The lessons are always stimulating in terms of musical theory and full of practical insights, tips and advice. Peter has all the qualities of the best teachers, true musicianship combined with the ability to explain clearly and is always supportive and encouraging. Malcolm
Peter has a very gentle, encouraging manner, though he can be tough when he needs to be, (the inevitable gaps in practice which come with younger children) without being intimidating. My children have both found his instruction easy to follow and most importantly, given their ages, they have found the lessons enjoyable. The children regularly play at home for their own enjoyment rather than because they feel they have to.Ali
I began piano lessons with Peter Hayes in 2010 and was obviously, as a mature pupil, a little apprehensive about this new venture. However, Peter immediately put me at ease and made the whole experience delightful. He is highly experienced in all musical areas and is extremely patient and is always happy to answer any questions I may have (no matter how stupid).  My love is Jazz and Peter has spent a lot of time with me on the theory which helps enormously with my piano practice.  I can't imagine taking lessons with any other teacher - he makes you feel comfortable and at home. Thanks Peter.Ann
I have been having lessons from Peter Hayes for about 4 years. He is always positive in his teaching, never critical.  He gears the lessons to go at my pace, but also encourages me to take on new musical challenges. His calm and kind nature threads through all his teaching.Eva
I took private jazz piano lessons for a year with Peter Hayes until I moved abroad. During that time I could feel a fast progress in my playing and understanding of music. As I had a classical music background I felt the need for more ideas for accompanying and improvising. The lessons with Peter Hayes helped me to develop more freedom and to understand better chord voicings and the use of modal scales. Peter Hayes is a very creative and lovely teacher and we are still good friends! I would definitely recommend these lessons to anyone wanting to deepen their understanding of jazz and music in general. Marianne
I have been having piano tuition with Peter for the last 5 years. I have found Peter to be very patient and thorough and always helpful in resolving any difficulties or queries that arise. I never feel under pressure to rush and have been able to progress at a pace that is right for myself. He is an excellent tutor and I would happily recommend him to anybody.Dave
